Greener Pastures

Trevor Bovis, a bull-turned-activist-turned-sellout-lawyer, headlines this award-winning Australian satire dressed as a funny-animal comic.

đź“– self-published • Started 1994

One sunny day on a rural New South Wales farm, a stud bull decides there must be more to life than eating grass all day and having his way with the heifers all night. He stands on his hind legs, names himself Trevor Bovis, and heads off to the bright lights of Sydney—where he becomes a university student, a social activist, and eventually a sell-out tax lawyer hiding in human suburbia. So begins Greener Pastures, the cult-classic Australian comic in which the end of the world might just be settled by a depressed minotaur in an office suit.

Created by Tim McEwen and Michael Michalandos in 1990 as a strip for the University of New South Wales paper Tharunka, the series was self-published from 1994 to 1998, selling in the thousands and finding fans worldwide. Nominated for roughly twenty industry awards—winning the OzCon Awards for Favourite Writer and Favourite Character—it became a cornerstone of the ’90s Australian black-and-white indie boom.

After 27 years on hiatus, the history-making return issue #8 landed in 2024 with 30 pages by the likes of Dave Sim, Nicola Scott, and Ashley Wood, inked by McEwen for continuity. A new graphic novel serializes in Adventure Illustrated, and the 30th-anniversary collection reprints the first four issues from remastered original art. Perfect for fans of Cerebus, funny-animal satire, and Usagi Yojimbo’s anthropomorphic mastery.
